Why I Work

Forever improving

Growing up I always knew I wanted my career to involve my hands. I enjoyed basketball and skateboarding, and activities that involved immense focus during excitement. I welcomed competition with others, but most of all sought to compete with myself. I thoroughly love the challenge of pushing my limits with glass. It drives me to make a plan, while preparing for immediate response and calm reaction. It excites me that I can never know all there is about glass and its possibilities.

“The real risk is not changing. I have to feel that I'm after something. If I make money, fine. But I'd rather be striving. It's the striving, man, it's that I want.” -John Coltrane

Good People

I have made my best friends blowing glass. My mentor is the man who taught me how to blow glass, and has become like an older brother in my life. Most of my closest friends have come from the glass world, not that we are alike, but because we can relate to being in love with this material. Each city or town I’ve worked in, holds its own glass community. We need each other to create our individual works. Even if it’s only a week of making work with one another, we can become life-long friends. I have so much love for all the good people I’ve met along the way and so much excitement for those ahead.

For the Love of Glass

I’ve learned so much about myself since I fell in love with glass. The material has truly changed how I approach much of my life. There never seems to be full control, but rather an understanding of its movements. Learning more about the material every time I touch it, is how I know I’ll never get bored. Glassblowing is exciting, heart breaking, yet rewarding, and brings ever-growing gratitude that I can use this skill to make a living.
